Volvo is a brand that’s quietly undergone some serious change in recent years. From a purveyor of boxy practicality through an attempt to inject some R-flavoured, BTCC-hooning sporting excitement; from a Swedish outpost of the Ford empire to Chinese ownership. Volvo’s seen it all over these past three decades.
As a major paint supplier of Detroit's big three, PPG would commission every year a car to be used as a pace car in the Indy Car World Series. In 1984 Chrysler began the development of a mid-engined, rear-wheel drive car using an experimental powertrain. To avoid the costs of creating a whole new chassis, the M4S is based on a modified Huffaker tubular chassis with full roll cage taken from the Pontiac Fiero IMSA race car, only lengthened to a 100-inch wheelbase.
Saab 9-4X Revealed
It’s nice to see that Saab are getting back to being a maker of cars rather than a pawn of GM, and the reveal this afternoon of the Saab 9-4X marks the second new model in 2010 for Saab, even though both the Saab 9-5 and the Saab 9-4X have been on the horizon for what seems like forever. And, of course, after years (buried) under the GM umbrella Saab’s products are going to be GM based, at least for now. So what we have with the Saab 904X is a Saab-ised Cadillac SRX, but that’s not too bad a thing.
